Early Detection of Silent Hypoxia

Three patients in Banyumas reportedly appeared asymptomatic but then suddenly died. According to a statement of Banyumas Regent Achmad Husein, all three of them seemed happy before they died. Unlike other Covid-19 patients, they had not shown any symptoms of cough, flu or fever. However, the oxygen saturation (the percentage of red blood cells that bind oxygen) continued to decline, leading to breathing failure. Inilah yang kemudian ramai disebut sindrom “happy hipoxia”. Sindrom ini dikabarkan banyak menimpa pasien Covid-19 meskipun sebelum pandemi hal ini dapat dijumpai juga seperti pada kasus infeksi paru lain, atelektasis, dan pirau intrapulmoner. Namun ini menjadi booming karena di latar belakangi pandemi Covid-19 saat ini.

Media sosial riuh dengan pendapat yang berdasarkan pengetahuan. Namun, banyak juga asal puji atau kritik tanpa mau tahu secara mendalam isu ini. Mari kita coba dengan kepala dingin memahami ”lomba” membuat vaksin demi mengatasi pandemi yang kini setiap hari menginfeksi hampir 300.000 orang ini. Presiden Rusia Vladimir Putin baru saja mengumumkan, negaranya jadi yang pertama berhasil memproduksi vaksin pada 11 Agustus lalu. Vaksin ini akan segera digunakan untuk vaksinasi massal pada Oktober mendatang. Putin mengatakan, vaksin itu aman dan putrinya sendiri menjadi salah satu sukarelawan uji klinis. Vaksin ini diberi nama Sputnik V, meneruskan nama Sputnik I, satelit Rusia yang pada 1957 jadi wahana luar angkasa pertama di dunia, mengalahkan AS. Rusia mengklaim, sudah ada 20 negara yang memesan lebih dari 1 miliar vaksin Sputnik V.
