HARI Ginjal Sedunia (World Kidney Day) 2025 diperingati pada 13 Maret lalu dengan tema Are your kidneys OK? Detect early, protect kidney health. Tema ini menekankan pentingnya deteksi dini karena penyakit ginjal sering datang tanpa gejala sehingga perlu tindakan preventif. Pengecekan berkala dapat mendeteksi kegagalan ginjal lebih dini sehingga dapat segera ditangani. Karena, jika pengobatannya terlambat, dapat mengubah kualitas hidup kita selamanya. Jumlah penderita sakit ginjal terus bertambah dengan pesat. Jurnal The Lancet edisi November 2024 melaporkan, jumlah orang dewasa penderita diabetes tipe 1 dan tipe 2 di dunia pada 2022 telah melampaui 828 juta orang, meningkat lebih dari empat kali lipat dari jumlah total pada 1990.

SELAMAT bertemu lagi dengan Ramadan dengan segala barokah-nya. Umat Islam wajib menjalani puasa selama satu bulan penuh serta disunahkan menjalani beberapa amalan yang lain. Kewajiban berpuasa Ramadan itu dijelaskan pada surah Al-Baqarah ayat 183, agar kita menjadi orang yang bertakwa. Namun, di artikel ini kita akan mendiskusikan manfaat berpuasa bagi kesehatan tubuh. Kali ini kita mendiskusikan autophagy, salah satu proses yang terjadi jika kita menjalani puasa. Penelitian Yoshinori Ohsumi menyebutkan, saat manusia melakukan puasa selama 8 hingga 16 jam, akan terjadi proses autophagy, atau kita sebut saja otofagi.

The progress of China's biotechnology industry will create opportunities for Indonesia as long as we are smart enough and can take advantage of it. To this day, it is difficult to deny that the United States is the most powerful country in the world and still dominates technological advancements in various fields. However, recent developments indicate that US dominance is beginning to be threatened by China's technological advancements. In the digital technology sector, the popularity of TikTok has even led the US government to consider banning the application made by a Chinese company, unless its shares are sold to US entrepreneurs. Most recently, the artificial intelligence (AI) service from China, DeepSeek, has emerged and shaken the dominance of its predecessors, such as ChatGPT and Meta, products of US technology companies.

Kemajuan industri bioteknologi China ini akan membangkitkan peluang bagi Indonesia sepanjang kita cukup cerdik dan bisa memanfaatkannya. Sampai hari ini, sulit dibantah bahwa Amerika Serikat adalah negara paling perkasa di dunia dan masih mendominasi kemajuan teknologi di berbagai bidang. Namun, perkembangan belakangan mengindikasikan dominasi AS itu mulai terancam kemajuan penguasaan teknologi China. If genomics and AI research are becoming favorite research themes in developed countries, will our scientists follow suit? In October, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2024 Nobel Prizes in the categories of Medicine-Physiology, Chemistry, Physics, Literature, and Peace. Looking at the Nobel Prize winners in Medicine, Physics, and Chemistry, it appears that there has been rapid progress in genomic research and artificial intelligence (AI) and this is driving technological progress in the medical and health fields. What can we learn from this Nobel laureate? New breakthrough The Nobel Prize in Medicine-Physiology was awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun from the United States (US). Both were considered to have contributed to their discovery that microRNA plays a role in regulating post-transcriptional gene activity. This discovery opens up opportunities to develop new ways to treat various diseases, including cancer and autoimmune diseases.
